Frequently
Asked Questions
What is Log A Load For KidsĀ®?
Log A Load For Kids is a nationwide giving campaign through which
loggers and others contribute the value of a load of logs, or any
amount, to local Children's Miracle Network-affiliated hospitals
and organize related fundraising events. 100 percent of all contributions
go to hospitals; overhead expenses are contributed separately by
sponsoring associations, the Children's Miracle Network, and corporate
and private underwriting. There are currently Log A Load campaigns
in 27 states. Since 1988, local Log A Load programs have raised
over $22 million nationwide.
How much does Log A Load For Kids raise every year?
Last year, Log A Load For Kids reported total receipts of over $2
million. North Carolina was one of the top states in funds raised.
How do children's hospitals benefit?
Children's hospitals affiliated with the Children's Miracle Network
are pledged to provide services regardless of a patient's ability
to pay. Contributions through Log A Load For Kids help meet the
financial deficits at our hospitals. In addition, some campaigns
dedicate funding to special projects, such as the purchase of a
piece of medical equipment or underwriting the expenses of a specialized
clinic. At present, Log A Load For Kids campaigns in the 27 participating
states provide financial support to approximately 70 participating
CMN hospitals. In North Carolina, we support three hospitals in
the state.
What is the Children's Miracle Network?
The Children's Miracle Network is the dominant North American organization
actively providing better health care to kids, through its 173
associated hospitals, raising funds through corporate sponsors,
national associations, and community businesses. CMN-affiliated
hospitals treat 14 million children across North America annually.
Each year, fundraising efforts culminate in a nationally broadcast
television special from Walt Disney World the weekend following
Memorial Day, in which sports figures and other celebrities participate.
Who runs Log A Load For Kids?
Log A Load For Kids fundraising is coordinated at the state level
by state logging or forestry associations. Each association helps
loggers and foresters organize fundraising events, coordinate logistics
of contributing, and publicize the program statewide. Representatives
of some of these associations meet once a year as the Log A Load
For Kids Advisory Group to set goals and undertake national-level
planning. In North Carolina, Sam Cook is the current chairman.
What is a state logging or forestry association?
Logging contractors, forest products businesses, and others with
an interest in promoting and conserving the forest resource have
formed statewide associations in states with significant forested
area. These associations promote common goals, usually related
to conservation, education, government relations, improving the
business environment, and promoting forest products.
What is a logging contractor?
Logging firms are small businesses, often family-run. They range
from sole proprietors without employees to multi-crew operations
employing in excess of 20 woods workers. These small businesses
perform more than 95% of the logging in the United States. The
Forest Resources Association estimates that there are about 37,000
logging contractors operating in the United States, employing a
total of about 150,000 workers.
Are only loggers involved?
Employees of sawmills, pulp and paper mills, and other forest enterprises
that depend on loggers often find many ways to help, by helping
sponsor fundraisers, making direct donations, and assisting in
promotion and planning.
How is Log A Load coordinated at the state level?
State logging or forestry association staff and committees make contact
with CMN-affiliated hospitals, determine projects to be funded,
and set fundraising goals for the year. They then publicize the
program, organize fundraisers, and arrange other giving opportunities.
What kind of fundraisers does Log A Load hold?
Log A Load was originally formed to provide any logger with an opportunity
to contribute the value of a load of logs to a local CMN. However,
many other creative fundraising ideas soon evolved, including sponsored
golf tournaments, cookouts, log and equipment auctions, and raffles.
As the program grows, Log A Load participants continue to come
up with new ways to help children's hospitals meet their needs.
